Birthday Postcards

Postkarten DIN-Format

Postcards travel around the world.

Unlike a greeting card, a postcard does not necessarily have to congratulate. Postcards are more likely to be perceived as pictures or messages or ideas. You can pin them quickly and easily to the pinboard or even attach them to the refrigerator with a magnet. They do not take up much space and are reduced to the bare essentials. The small cards can also be collected very well and can be decorated with them as with photos.

Postcard format

The most common format for postcards is DIN A6 and thus 4.1 x 5.8 in size. Formats DIN A5 (5.8 x 8.3 in) as well as DIN long (4.3 x 8.7 in) are also widely used.

The postcard sizes are internationally regulated. The smallest possible format is 3.5 x 5.5 in and the largest possible format is 4.8 x 9.3 in. Furthermore, the long side of a postcard must be at least 1.4 times longer than the short side. The rectangular shape is mandatory. Therefore you have to send special formats like hearts or squares in envelopes.

Most of our cards are in DIN A6 format. But we also have motifs in DIN long format in special size 4.1 x 8.3 in.

Brief history of the postcard

As an open alternative to the letter, the postcard was a real pioneer of the short news at the end of the 19th century. In most countries the postcard was introduced in the early 1870s. A postcard could hold less text, but this was sufficient for many occasions.

You could write a postcard faster and you didn't need an envelope. Besides, sending postcards was much cheaper than sending letters. The postage in Germany was only 2 ounces compared to 5 ounces for letters.

Data protection problem

And yet the postcard met with much resistance, especially in Germany. Many political decision-makers considered the idea of sending messages that were openly readable for everyone to read to be very dubious. Ironically, data protection was already at stake then. On the other hand, there were fears that postal revenues would fall because fewer people would send letters.

It is true that 100 years before the actual introduction of the postcard, open communications were already introduced in Paris (1760) and Vienna (1764). They were messages from small local postal companies. But it was not until the introduction of the stamp in 1840 that the postcard was able to make its way into the world. From 1896 the first postcards with coloured pictures were produced. Source: Wikipedia

Sometimes it must be a greeting card

If you want it to look a little more festive, you can also choose a folding card instead of a postcard. With a greeting card there is more space for text. You can also put something inside, like a voucher or something similar. Then the card becomes a gift. There is also more choice among the greeting cards for Christmas cards. Discover our greeting cards here. Our motives for the greeting cards are not the same as for the postcards, so you might find something beautiful among the greeting cards, which you cannot see here.
